MUMBAI/GOA: Maharashtra Fisheries authorities have seized two Goan fishing trawlers for allegedly operating illegally in the State’s waters using banned LED fishing equipment, in a crackdown that has sent ripples through Goa’s fishing and political circles.
Sources said one of the trawlers is linked to a Goa BJP MLA, raising concerns about political proximity and regulatory enforcement.
Officials confirmed that the vessels were detained for jurisdiction violation and the use of prohibited gear, both punishable under fisheries regulations.
Meanwhile, Goa Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar said the State would adopt a “zero-tolerance” stance toward illegal fishing practices that threaten both marine ecology and the livelihoods of local fisherfolk.
“The action will continue, and strict measures will be taken against trawlers operating illegally, as per law,” Halarnkar said, noting that the department was working with enforcement agencies to intensify coastal surveillance and ensure compliance.
The seizures come at a time when traditional fishermen in Goa have repeatedly flagged the problem of out-of-State trawlers encroaching into local waters, particularly those using banned LED lights and high-intensity gear that fishermen claim deplete fish stocks rapidly.
Fishermen’s groups say such incursions have directly affected catch volumes and destabilised income for small-scale fishing communities. The ongoing joint operations by the Fisheries Department and Coastal Police include increased patrol boat deployment and tighter monitoring of suspicious activity along the coastline.
Officials said the latest action is part of a sustained statewide drive to protect marine resources, with violators facing fines, seizure of gear and even licence cancellation.
Investigations are underway to verify ownership details of the seized trawlers and determine the extent of illegal operations.
