VASCO: In a shocking incident, a huge tree came crashing along the road opposite the St Andrews Church in Vasco on Monday evening amidst heavy rains and strong gusts of wind.
Fortunately, the incident did not cause any injuries or loss of life, despite being one of the busiest roads in Vasco
The drivers of both the parked cars were lucky enough as they had left the cars barely minutes before the crash occurred.
Meanwhile, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, City ward councillor Shami Salkar and Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Girish Borker rushed to the site immediately and alerted the Fire department who arrived to clear the tree from the road.
The traffic police also arrived at the site to regulate the traffic and ensure smooth traffic movement as work began on clearing the tree from the site.
Speaking to the media, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar that the tree had gone old and collapsed amidst heavy rains
” We had already trimmed the branches of around 33 dangerous trees to reduce their load in and around Vasco. However, we had assumed that this tree was strong but we now realise that the tree looked strong but had weak roots. This year, we have had a lot of incessant rains that have loosened the mud making it dangerous and we also had strong winds to make the situation worse. We will now start the trimming process of trees by next week because this is the first tree that has fallen in Vasco during this season. We have also decided that we will replace all the old trees with new trees when we take the project to beautify the Swatantra Path Road after a joint inspection with the Forest Department,” said Salkar.
City ward councillor Shami Salkar said that maximum trees had been identified and trimmed by using a crane.
“This tree had grown weak in the roots and has crashed today, but fortunately there was no loss of life or human injuries in the incident. We have decided that we will start the trimming of dangerous trees by tomorrow so that such incidents can be avoided ” said Salkar.
