PANAJI: A delegation of tribal leaders from Goa, led by Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, met Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal in New Delhi to follow up on the early implementation of “The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Act, 2025.”
The delegation included Chairperson of the Goa Commission for SC/ST Ravindra Gaonkar, former minister Prakash Velip, Rajendra Borkar and Ravindra Velip.
During the meeting, the delegation stressed the urgency of notifying the appointed date under the Act so that it can be implemented before the Goa Legislative Assembly elections in 2027, ensuring political representation for Scheduled Tribes in the state.
Taking cognizance of the request, the Union minister directed the delegation to engage with concerned officials in the Ministry of Law and Justice for detailed discussions.
The delegation subsequently met Law Secretary Dr Mani and held discussions on the procedural aspects involved in notifying the Act. The Law Secretary assured them that the matter would be examined on priority.
The delegation expressed optimism that the required notification would be issued at the earliest, fulfilling the long-pending demand of the Scheduled Tribe community in Goa and ensuring their representation in the Goa Assembly.
