PANAJI: In a major step towards sustainable waste management, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA), and M/s GD Environmental Pvt. Ltd. have entered into a tripartite agreement to set up a 10 TPD (tonnes per day) Gasification Technology-based Waste Treatment Plant at Sonsodo, Margao.
The project marks a significant milestone in Margao’s ongoing efforts to address the issue of mixed solid waste and reduce reliance on landfills through modern, environment-friendly technology. The gasification-based plant will be implemented under the supervision of GEDA, on behalf of MMC.
The Pune-based firm, M/s GD Environmental Pvt. Ltd., has been awarded the contract for fabrication and installation of the plant, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2025 or early 2026.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Gauresh Pilgaonkar, Managing Director, Goa Energy Development Agency; Madhu Narvekar, Chief Officer, Margao Municipal Council; and representatives of M/s GD Environmental Pvt. Ltd.
Speaking on the occasion, Gauresh Pilgaonkar stated that the project represents a forward-looking step in adopting innovative waste management solutions in Goa and demonstrates the State’s commitment to sustainable development. Madhu Narvekar highlighted that the initiative will help resolve long-standing waste management challenges at Sonsodo and ensure a cleaner and healthier Margao.
Member Secretary Sanjeev Joglekar elaborated on the unique features of the gasification system, noting its potential to serve as a model for other waste management initiatives in the State.
The collaboration underscores the joint commitment of all stakeholders to promote sustainable waste management, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and generate local employment opportunities — contributing significantly to Goa’s environmental sustainability and circular economy goals.
