TRIPURA: Flash floods triggered by incessant rainfall wreaked havoc in South Tripura on Wednesday, leaving over 250 families displaced and forcing the administration to shut all schools and anganwadi centres as a precautionary measure.
According to District Magistrate Md Sajad P, a total of 840 individuals from 250 families have been affected and are currently taking shelter in 16 relief camps set up across the district. While water levels have now started receding, several areas remain submerged and under watch.
The flooding occurred after the Muhuri River crossed its danger mark of 15.70 metres, breaching embankments and inundating low-lying areas in the Belonia and Santirbazar subdivisions.
“The administration is fully prepared and is taking all necessary steps to manage the situation. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has arrived in Belonia to aid in rescue and relief operations,” said the DM, adding that evacuation efforts are ongoing to shift residents from vulnerable areas to safer ground.
As a preventive measure, the district administration ordered the closure of all schools and anganwadi centres on Wednesday to ensure the safety of children and staff.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha is closely monitoring the situation and is being updated regularly on the flood developments, officials said. People living in low-lying areas have been advised to stay alert and follow official advisories.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for South Tripura, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning on Thursday, keeping the district on high alert.
Relief measures, food distribution, and medical aid are being extended to the affected families as the administration works to restore normalcy in the region.
