PERNEM: Pernem Police have arrested the absconding driver of a container truck that was found transporting illicit liquor worth around ₹60 lakh after a fire incident in June this year.
On June 17, the container truck caught fire at Mahakhajan, Dhargal, in Pernem. Fire and Emergency Services personnel broke open the sealed container while dousing the blaze, only to discover 1,286 boxes of liquor of various brands inside.
Police later found that the truck’s chassis number had been tampered with and it was bearing a fake registration plate (NL-01-N-2598). The driver abandoned the vehicle at the site and fled, while the liquor consignment was handed over to the Excise Department, Pernem, for further action.
Since then, both the driver and the truck owner had been on the run. Acting on technical surveillance and intelligence inputs, a Pernem police team traced the accused to Gujarat. After sustained efforts, the driver was arrested on August 18.
The accused is currently in police custody. The investigation is being conducted by PSI Tukaram Chodankar under the supervision of PI Sachin Lokre of Pernem Police Station.
