Washington: In a dramatic escalation of tensions, the Trump administration has paused U.S. military aid to Ukraine, just days after a contentious meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. This move comes as Trump seeks a rapid end to the conflict, which has been ongoing since Russia’s invasion in 2022. The pause in aid is part of a broader strategy to pressure Kyiv into peace negotiations with Moscow.
The decision to halt aid was confirmed by a White House official, who emphasized that the administration is focused on achieving peace and expects its partners to share this commitment. “We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution,” the official stated.
This pause has significant implications for Ukraine, which relies heavily on U.S. military support to counter Russia’s advances. Congressional Democrats have swiftly condemned the move, labeling it dangerous and illegal. Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, urged Republicans to join him in demanding that Trump lift the freeze immediately.
Trump’s stance has also been marked by criticism of Zelenskyy, whom he warned would not last long without a ceasefire deal with Moscow. Zelenskyy, however, remains committed to securing tough security guarantees as a precondition for peace, a stance that has drawn criticism from both Russia and the U.S.
European allies, meanwhile, are exploring options to increase their support for Ukraine, including a potential one-month truce proposal backed by Britain and France. This comes as concerns grow over the U.S. pivot towards Russia and its impact on global alliances.
