Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has indicated fresh momentum in trade negotiations between India and the United States, expressing optimism about reaching a bilateral agreement and praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a close friend and a strong leader.
Speaking on the sidelines of an international economic forum, Trump said discussions between the two countries were moving in a positive direction and suggested that a trade deal was within reach. He described Prime Minister Modi as a “fantastic man” and said the personal rapport between the two leaders had helped strengthen ties between New Delhi and Washington.
Trump said he had great respect for Modi and was confident that negotiators from both sides would be able to work out an agreement that benefits both economies. He added that the United States and India shared a strong relationship and that trade cooperation was a natural extension of that partnership.
Trade talks between the two countries have been ongoing for several years, focusing on resolving differences over tariffs, market access and regulatory barriers. While progress has been uneven, officials on both sides have continued to signal willingness to find common ground, particularly in areas such as manufacturing, technology, energy and defence-related industries.
Trump’s remarks come amid renewed diplomatic engagement between India and the United States, as both countries seek to strengthen economic ties in a shifting global trade environment. The proposed agreement aims to expand bilateral trade volumes and encourage greater investment flows, though several complex issues remain under negotiation.
Observers note that Trump’s emphasis on personal diplomacy reflects his broader approach to foreign policy, where leader-level relationships are often highlighted as catalysts for progress. His comments are also seen as an effort to project confidence in the talks despite unresolved disagreements.
Indian and US trade officials are expected to continue discussions in the coming months, with both sides under pressure to demonstrate tangible outcomes. While no timeline has been announced for concluding a deal, Trump’s comments suggest a push to accelerate negotiations.
The renewed optimism comes at a time when both countries are seeking to diversify trade partnerships and reduce vulnerabilities in global supply chains, adding strategic weight to the proposed agreement.
If concluded, the deal would mark a significant step in deepening economic cooperation between the world’s largest democracy and its largest economy, building on an already expanding strategic partnership.
