New Delhi: Mohammad Fathali, the ambassador of Iran to India, has said that India could play a constructive role in reducing tensions in West Asia as the crisis around the Strait of Hormuz continues to raise concerns over maritime security and global energy supplies.
Speaking about the evolving situation, the envoy highlighted India’s diplomatic credibility and balanced foreign policy, stating that these factors place the country in a strong position to help facilitate dialogue among the parties involved in the conflict. He noted that India’s standing as a major voice of the Global South allows it to contribute positively to efforts aimed at easing tensions.
Fathali also described India as a trusted diplomatic bridge because of its longstanding relationships with several nations involved in the crisis. According to him, these historical and strategic ties enable India to help reduce misunderstandings and encourage communication between opposing sides.
Addressing concerns about Indian ships currently passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the envoy said that while he did not have exact figures on the number of vessels, authorities were monitoring reported cases. Some Indian vessels have already been allowed safe passage through the strategic waterway, though certain delays have occurred due to tensions in the region.
He further clarified that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for international navigation. However, he indicated that vessels belonging to countries Iran considers aggressors would not be allowed to pass through the corridor. Ships from other nations that have not supported hostile operations against Iran, he said, can continue to use the route for safe navigation.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption in the route can have a major impact on international energy markets and global trade, making diplomatic efforts to stabilise the region increasingly important.
