CALANGUTE: Calangute Police have arrested two youths from Karnataka for their alleged involvement in a series of mobile phone thefts targeting tourists in the Calangute area.
The accused have been identified as Basavaraja D. G. (24), son of P. G. Ganesh, a resident of Dodderi village, Gangur post, Bhadravati taluka in Shivamogga district, Karnataka, and Kiran G. (21), son of Guruppa G., a resident of Bhovi Colony near Mari Yamma Temple, Dodderi, Gangur post, Bhadravati sub-division in Shimoga district, Karnataka.
According to the police, the arrests were made during intensive patrolling carried out on the instructions of Police Inspector Paresh G. Naik of Calangute Police Station. The police team noticed the two suspects moving suspiciously near Dolphin Circle in Calangute. When questioned, the duo failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for their presence and gave evasive replies, prompting the police to bring them to the police station for further verification.
During interrogation, the accused were found in possession of multiple mobile phones. On sustained questioning, they reportedly admitted to having committed mobile phone thefts at various locations across Goa, mainly targeting tourists. The stolen mobile phones were seized under a panchanama, and both accused were placed under arrest under Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The operation was carried out by a team from Calangute Police Station led by Head Constable Vidhyanand Amonkar, with the assistance of police constables Vijay Naik, Amir Garad, Ganpat Tiloji and Raj Parab.
Further investigation in the case is underway under the supervision of Police Inspector Paresh Naik, with overall supervision by SDPO Porvorim Vishwesh Karpe and SP North District Harishchandra Madkaikar.
