MANDREM: Two men were arrested in connection with an illegal bullfight organized for betting purposes at Khalchawada, Arambol in North Goa’s Pernem taluka. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on July 9 and was reported by Police Sub-Inspector Jaydeep Rama Palyekar of Mandrem Police Station.
According to police, the accused—Devaraja Biradar (32) from Vijayapura, Karnataka, and Basavaraj Valikar (28), also from Vijayapura—had arranged the bullfight at an open ground without taking necessary precautions for the safety and welfare of the animals involved. Both men are currently residing in Kattewada, Morjim.
The duo allegedly organized the event to profit through betting, thereby violating animal welfare laws and subjecting the bulls to cruelty. Authorities said the bulls were provoked into fighting, which constitutes an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
Based on the written complaint, Mandrem Police registered a case under Crime No. 75/2025 for offences under Sections 11(1)(m) and 11(1)(n) of the Act. The accused were arrested at 9:04 p.m. and, after observing due legal procedures, were released on bail at 9:59 p.m.
The investigation is being led by Lady Police Sub-Inspector Archana Sharma of Mandrem Police Station and remains ongoing.
