New Delhi: Two members of the Australian women’s cricket team, currently in India for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, were allegedly molested while walking from their hotel to a café in Indore on Thursday morning.
According to officials, the players raised an SOS alert immediately after the incident. Security officers reached the location promptly, and the team’s security manager, Danny Simmons, lodged a complaint at the MIG Police Station later that evening.
Following the complaint, the police registered an FIR and arrested the accused, identified as Aqeel Khan, who was riding a motorcycle. The players are staying at the Radisson Blu Hotel along with the rest of the Australian squad.
Sub-Inspector Nidhi Raghuvanshi stated that the two cricketers were walking towards a café when the accused began following them and allegedly touched one of the players inappropriately before fleeing. “A bystander noted the motorcycle’s number, which helped us trace the accused. Khan was arrested and is known to have prior criminal cases registered against him,” the officer said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Himani Mishra met the players, recorded their statements, and confirmed that an FIR was filed under Section 74 (use of criminal force to outrage a woman’s modesty) and Section 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The swift action by local authorities has been acknowledged by the Australian team management and ICC event security officials. The investigation is ongoing.
