BICHOLIM: Bicholim Police registered two separate cases of illegal gambling and arrested two persons who were allegedly caught accepting money bets in public places.
In the first case, registered at around 2.26 pm on February 5, 2026, Head Constable Sakharam Raut (HC 5865) of Bicholim Police Station lodged a state complaint. Police said that at about 1.30 pm, opposite Shivaji Maidan near the Sulabh toilet in Bicholim, the accused, Devidas Chari (37), a businessman and resident of Parvati Nagar, Kulan, Bicholim, was caught red-handed while accepting money bets from members of the public in an open public place. Police seized cash of ₹1,150 in different denominations along with other gambling articles from his possession.
The accused was arrested on the same day and has been remanded to police custody. Further investigation is being carried out by HC Sakharam Raut.
In the second case, registered at around 2.37 pm, HC Rupesh Halarnkar (HC 5008) lodged a state complaint stating that at about 1.40 pm in front of the Municipality Market, Bicholim, the accused, Anand Govekar (52), a businessman and resident of IDC, Bicholim, was caught red-handed while accepting money bets from the public in an open public place.
Police seized cash amounting to ₹1,215 in different denominations and other gambling-related articles from his possession. The accused was arrested on February 5, 2026, and further investigation is in progress with HC Rupesh Halarnkar.
Bicholim Police have reiterated that strict action will continue against illegal gambling activities in public places.
