VASCO: The two burglars who were nabbed by Vasco police late Saturday night while they were in the process of breaking into the Our Lady of Candelaria School at Baina have been linked to all school burglaries in South Goa.
While there had been many incidents of burglaries reported in schools across Goa and schools had been demanding protection, it was an alert Principal on Easter Eve that finally helped Vasco police nab the burglars while attempting to burgle the school at Baina
According to information, the burglars entered the Our Lady of Candelaria school and were caught in the CCTV which raised a movement alarm on the phone of the principal who informed the Parish priest and the Vasco police and finally, the burglars were caught red-handed in the school.
The situation was such that the Parish Priest urged the parishioners to help the police who had initially cordoned off the school area and the mass was even delayed by around 30 minutes while the burglars were caught.
The police had to enter the school in the dark and even had a scuffle causing minor injuries to the police staff who nabbed the burglars from school and took them to the police station.
The school principal Shifra Gracias said that she got an alert on her phone at around 11 pm on Saturday
“I received a notification on my phone that a movement had been detected in the school and I checked the footage immediately where I saw two hooded boys inside the office. They were with hoods and were opening the office cupboards and we had to take action and apprehend them without alerting them. I immediately called the Parish Priest and we also contacted the police to tell them about the incident. I also spoke to our Lower division clerk who reached the site and finally, the police managed to nab the culprits from the school,” said Gracias.
Parish Priest Fr Dominic DSouza said that he had urged the parishioners to help the police nab the culprits.
Culprits linked to school burglaries
across the state: Vasco Police
Vasco Police Inspector Kapil Nayak on Sunday informed reporters that the two persons nabbed while attempting to burgle Baina school have been linked to various school burglaries reported across the state
“We got a call around 11 pm on Saturday that there was a movement of unknown culprits in the Our Lady of Candelaria school and I sent our patrolling staff to school and we surrounded the school,” he said.
The school was dark and our staff took the entire search they managed to find the two culprits who were trying to hide and finally after a scuffle managed to nab them, he added.
“We then took them to the police station and recorded a complaint from the school Headmistress and registered the offence under section 457, 380 of IPC. We then interrogated both the accused because recently there had been three similar crimes of school burglaries have been reported from Mormugao Taluka, two in Vasco and one in Velsao. We later arrested them and in the course of interrogation, they confessed their involvement in all three cases of Mormugao and other school burglaries in the state as well. The two accused are Jahid Siran ( 32), a resident of Udupi and Moulali Sattar Jamadar ( 28 ) a native of Dandeli in Karnataka. We have already arrested the two persons and our further investigation is in progress to find out more details,” said Nayak.
Police are on the lookout
for the third accused
Vasco police inspector Kapil Nayak said that there was also a third accused involved in the series of school burglaries reported in the state.
“We had been interrogating both the accused in the past cases where they accepted that they have been involved but they also revealed that there was yet another person who was a part of the gang. We have now realised that there is a third accused in the case and he is from Udupi and his name is Vijay Shetty. We have been told that he is in Udupi and we have already sent our team to Udupi but his location has not been traced as yet. We have already tightened our intelligence to nab the accused,” said Nayak.
Three burglars had hatched their plan to burgle schools while they got to know each other in jail.
While the series of burglaries had been a headache for the Vasco police, they were shocked to realise that the three burglars had hatched the plans to burgle schools as a gang while they were together in a jail
“We have now realised that the three burglars had been involved in different theft cases individually and had met in jail. They then began to know each other and it was since then that they had operated as a gang to burgle schools in Goa. All these three burglars have many cases registered on them in different states where Vijay Shetty has around 18 cases, Jahid Siran has three more cases and Moulali Jamadar also has many other cases in different states. These are habitual offenders in such types of crimes and while we have arrested two persons, our team is already left to nab the third accused person,” said Nayak.
