New Delhi: Argentina football legend Lionel Messi is set to arrive in New Delhi on Monday, bringing his GOAT Tour of India 2025 to a close after visits to Kolkata, Hyderabad and Mumbai. Messi is expected to land in the national capital in the morning before heading to his hotel, following which he will attend a series of engagements at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Along with teammate Rodrigo De Paul, Messi is also scheduled to meet the Chief Justice of India, the Army Chief, the Argentina Ambassador and other senior government officials.
Mumbai provided one of the most memorable moments of the tour as the iconic Wankhede Stadium turned into a celebration of sport, culture and unity. The evening saw a rare convergence of football and cricket as Messi met Indian football great Sunil Chhetri and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, creating scenes that resonated deeply with fans across the country.
The event began with a charged atmosphere as thousands filled the stands, chanting Messi’s name. Music, cultural dance performances and a friendly football match between Indian Stars and Mitra Stars set the stage before Messi entered the stadium alongside Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul to a deafening reception. Messi soaked in the adulation, interacting with fans and young players, and even kicking footballs into the crowd.
One of the defining moments of the night came when Messi and Chhetri shared a warm embrace, a gesture that symbolised mutual respect between two icons of the game. Messi also spent time with young girls from a grassroots football initiative, exchanging passes and encouraging aspiring players.
The evening reached its emotional peak when Sachin Tendulkar joined Messi on the field. The two sporting greats exchanged gifts, with Tendulkar presenting an Indian cricket jersey and Messi offering a FIFA World Cup ball. The moment drew thunderous applause as the crowd celebrated the meeting of two number tens who defined generations in their respective sports.
Messi was also felicitated by the Maharashtra Chief Minister and took part in the unveiling of a youth football development initiative aimed at nurturing future talent. As chants of Messi and Sachin echoed through Wankhede, Mumbai witnessed a rare sporting moment that will be remembered long after the lights dimmed, before the football legend now turns his focus to the final leg of his India tour in Delhi.
