MARGAO: Two shops were destroyed in a late-night fire at the New Market in Margao, triggering concern among traders and vendors over the lack of fire safety infrastructure in the busy market complex. Firefighters rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control before it could spread further.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and officials are assessing the extent of the losses. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Reacting to the incident, trader Chirag Naik said the fire was alarming and highlighted long-standing concerns about inadequate fire safety arrangements in the market area. He stated that he had been raising the issue for the past two years and had approached multiple authorities, but no concrete action had been taken.
Naik expressed hope that the latest incident would prompt swift measures to improve safety. He also welcomed the ongoing work to replace the market’s roofing sheets, initiated by the Margao MLA, but stressed that the market requires comprehensive renovation along with proper facilities and safety mechanisms for vendors.
