New Delhi: Gurjant Singh has announced his retirement from international hockey, bringing an end to a distinguished career with the India men’s national field hockey team. The 31 year old striker made the announcement during the Hockey India Annual Awards held in New Delhi.
Gurjant concludes his international journey with 130 appearances and 33 goals for India, playing an important role in the team’s resurgence on the global stage over the past decade.
Born on January 26, 1995 in Khailara near Amritsar, Gurjant rose quickly through the junior ranks with his speed and attacking instinct. One of the early highlights of his career came during the 2016 Men’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup in Lucknow, where he scored in the final to help India secure the title.
He made his senior international debut in 2017 and soon established himself as a regular member of India’s forward line. His biggest achievements came at the Olympic Games, where he played a key role in India’s bronze medal winning campaigns at the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Apart from Olympic success, Gurjant was also part of the squad that won gold at the 2022 Asian Games and the 2017 Men’s Hockey Asia Cup, along with several titles in the Asian Champions Trophy. In recognition of his achievements, he received the Arjuna Award in 2021.
Paying tribute to his career, Dilip Tirkey praised Gurjant’s pace, energy and ability to deliver in crucial moments, noting that he represented the country with pride throughout his career.
Gurjant leaves the international stage with multiple major titles and two Olympic bronze medals, marking him as one of the notable forwards of India’s modern hockey era.
