PANAJI: In separate incidents reported in Goa, two women have fallen victim to cyber fraud, resulting in a combined loss of nearly Rs 2 lakh.
In the first case, a woman from Mardol was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.5 lakh after she was induced by cybercriminals to invest in a purported business scheme. According to a complaint lodged at the Mardol police station, the victim was contacted via Telegram by an unknown person who convinced her to invest in a scheme that involved liking and sharing videos in exchange for returns. Police said the woman did not receive any payment by the promised date and subsequently filed a complaint.
In another incident, reported at the Bicholim police station, a resident of Gokulwadi, Sanquelim, stated that she was defrauded of Rs 44,340. The complainant alleged that an individual posing as a representative of her satellite TV service provider persuaded her to share her banking credentials under the pretext of recharging her TV pack. The amount was withdrawn from her account shortly after she shared the information.
Police have registered offences in both cases under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Investigations are in progress.
