Canacona, Goa: Two youths from Nuem (Shristhal) were injured on Monday morning when a large tree fell onto the scooter they were riding near Shristhal. The incident occurred as the two were en route to Canacona when the roadside tree, which had uprooted, crashed directly onto their vehicle.
One of the scooterists, who was seriously injured and rendered unconscious, was first rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) before being transferred to the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) in Margao for further treatment. The other rider suffered minor injuries. According to local sources, the heavy branches of the tree struck the pillion rider, causing him to lose consciousness.
Locals have raised alarm about the numerous trees along the road leading to Shri Mallikarjun Temple, which they claim are in precarious condition and pose a danger to motorists and pedestrians. The road is frequently used by devotees, especially on Mondays, and also by residents of Nuem, Vaizawada, and students attending Shristhal Government High School.
Despite several complaints filed with the local panchayat and other authorities requesting the removal of these hazardous trees, no action has been taken. “The panchayat has given excuses about a lack of funds, and the disaster management authorities have remained silent about the issue,” one local resident said.
The accident caused significant disruption in traffic, especially as many devotees were heading to the temple. Vehicles were stranded on the road for some time until Fire Safety and Emergency Services arrived to clear the debris and remove the tree branches, allowing traffic to resume smoothly.
The incident highlights the urgent need for authorities to address the dangerous conditions posed by roadside trees, which are a growing concern for local residents and commuters alike.
