New Delhi: Goa’s emerging chess star Ethan Vaz delivered an outstanding performance to secure the silver medal at the National Under-17 Open Chess Championship held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat from March 30 to April 7, 2026.
The 14 year old chess prodigy remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, displaying remarkable consistency against a highly competitive field. He finished with an impressive tally of nine points from eleven rounds, registering seven victories and four draws. His composed and strategic play throughout the championship ensured him a well deserved place on the podium while bringing pride to Goa.
Following this strong performance, Ethan has earned selection to represent India at the upcoming World Youth Chess Championship and Asian Youth Chess Championship in 2026 in the Under 18 category.
The latest achievement further strengthens Ethan’s growing reputation on the national chess circuit. In December, he had claimed the gold medal at the National Junior Open Chess Championship. That victory also secured him a place in the Indian squad for the World Junior Chess Championship and the Asian Junior Chess Championship scheduled for 2026.
Recognised as the youngest International Master in India, Ethan now holds the rare distinction of being selected to represent the country in both youth and junior categories in the same year. In 2026, he will compete in the Under 18 Youth category as well as the Under 20 Junior category at major international tournaments.
He is set to participate in the World, Commonwealth and Asian chess championships across both age groups, marking an important milestone in his rapidly progressing career.
Ethan’s remarkable achievement is being widely celebrated as a significant boost for the chess community in Goa. His success highlights the state’s growing presence on the national and international chess stage and reflects the rising talent emerging from the region.
