New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla strongly reprimanded senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi for her recent comments about the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The controversy erupted after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju demanded a ruling from the Speaker on Gandhi’s statement that the bill was “bulldozed through” in the Lok Sabha. This development marked a significant moment in parliamentary politics, as it highlighted tensions between the ruling BJP and the Opposition.
Sonia Gandhi, a prominent figure in the Rajya Sabha, sparked the controversy by describing the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill as hurried and forceful. She made these remarks during a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party, labeling the bill a “brazen assault” on the Constitution and part of the BJP’s strategy to polarize society.
However, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla countered Gandhi’s claims by emphasizing that the bill underwent extensive debate and due process. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was debated in the Lok Sabha for 13 hours and 53 minutes, with active participation from members of various parties. The bill was also subject to division votes three times, ensuring its passage followed the established rules of the House. Birla pointed out that such remarks from a senior member of Parliament were not only unfortunate but also undermined the dignity of parliamentary proceedings.
The issue gained prominence when Kiren Rijiju raised it before the Speaker, prompting a stern response from Om Birla. Birla’s reaction underscored the seriousness with which Gandhi’s comments were viewed, reflecting a broader concern about maintaining respect for parliamentary processes. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the government and the Opposition, particularly over legislation that is perceived to impact constitutional norms and societal harmony.
