New Delhi: In the midst of India’s triumphant run in the ICC Champions Trophy, a political storm has erupted over comments made by Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed about Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma. Mohamed’s now-deleted social media post described Sharma as “fat” and labeled him “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had.” This remark, made just before India’s semifinal match against Australia in Dubai, has drawn sharp criticism from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia condemned Mohamed’s remarks as unfortunate, particularly given the timing with India’s crucial match approaching. “It’s very unfortunate that this kind of remark for our captain has come from a person who is on a responsible post,” Saikia stated, highlighting the team’s focus on the tournament.
Rohit Sharma, a World Cup-winning captain, has been widely praised for his leadership, especially after India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. The BJP has also blasted the Congress, with spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla questioning the party’s credibility in criticizing Sharma’s captaincy. “Those who have lost 90 elections under the captaincy of Rahul Gandhi are calling the captaincy of Rohit Sharma unimpressive!” Poonawalla remarked, emphasizing Sharma’s successful track record.
India’s impressive performance in the Champions Trophy, having won all their group matches, has further fueled the backlash against Mohamed’s comments. The Congress party has distanced itself from her remarks, urging caution in future statements.
