New Delhi: In a strong diplomatic response, India countered UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk’s comments on Kashmir and Manipur during the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. The session, which began on February 24, 2025, saw India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Arindam Bagchi, emphasize that India remains a “healthy, vibrant and pluralistic society,” dismissing Turk’s remarks as “unfounded and baseless.”
Bagchi highlighted that despite being mentioned in the global update, India’s ground realities starkly contrast with the concerns raised. He noted, “The people of India have repeatedly proven wrong such misplaced concerns about us.” Bagchi urged for a better understanding of India’s ethos of diversity and openness, which defines its robust civic space.
Turk’s update had referred to the situation in Manipur and Kashmir, calling for increased efforts to address violence and displacement in Manipur through dialogue and human rights initiatives. He also expressed concern over the use of restrictive laws against human rights defenders and journalists in Kashmir. However, Bagchi pointed out inaccuracies in Turk’s reference to Jammu and Kashmir, noting significant improvements in peace and development in the region, including successful provincial elections and booming tourism.
Turk acknowledged India’s democratic strengths but emphasized the need for ongoing participation and inclusion in society. India’s response underscored its commitment to maintaining democratic values while addressing human rights concerns.
