CANACONA: In a gruesome discovery on Tuesday morning, the severed body of an unidentified woman in her early thirties was found in two pieces on the Konkan Railway tracks, about 150 metres from Canacona Railway Station.
Railway police recovered the blood-soaked head and torso from the tracks, conducted an inquest panchnama, and sent the remains to South Goa District Hospital in Margao for post-mortem examination.
According to sources, the woman is believed to have walked from the Canacona station around 8:00 am and reportedly lay down on the tracks, falling asleep or deliberately positioning herself there. A goods train travelling from Karwar toward Margao struck her.
The train driver is said to have noticed her on the tracks and applied brakes, but was unable to stop in time due to the train’s speed. Police suspect it may have been a case of suicide.
Sources also noted that the woman was wearing a saree not typical of Goan style and had colourful bangles on her wrists, suggesting she may have been a non-Goan. Railway police have launched efforts to establish her identity and have appealed to the public for any information that could help trace her family or origins.
