MAPUSA: Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar, visited the Addiction Treatment Facility (ATF) at North Goa District Hospital, Mapusa. During his visit, the minister met patients currently undergoing treatment, individuals in recovery, and their families, commending their courage and determination in overcoming addiction.
Dr. Kumar also praised the ATF team in North Goa for setting national benchmarks in addiction treatment services. He encouraged them to continue their innovative efforts toward realizing a “Nasha Mukta Bharat,” a vision championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Goa’s Health Minister, Vishwajit Rane, highlighted the state’s commitment to providing comprehensive care and rehabilitation to those struggling with substance abuse. He noted that government facilities in Goa treat an average of seven patients daily, with 6,529 individuals receiving assistance between January 2022 and June 2024. The North Goa ATF alone has treated 2,145 patients for various addictions, including alcohol, tobacco, opioids, and cannabis.
Minister Rane stressed the importance of awareness campaigns, professional training, and continuous support for individuals battling addiction. He added that the state is dedicated to innovative and compassionate healthcare services to ensure a drug-free Goa.
The visit underscores the collaboration between the central and state governments in strengthening addiction treatment programs and promoting holistic wellness across the state.
