Panaji: As the world observes World Cancer Day, Goa has reaffirmed its commitment to accessible, compassionate and people-centric cancer care, placing patients and their families at the heart of the healthcare system.
Highlighting the theme “United by Unique”, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said that while cancer affects many, every patient’s journey is different and deserves care that goes beyond treatment alone. “In Goa, our approach to cancer care is guided by the belief that healthcare must be humane, inclusive and tailored to the unique needs of each patient and family,” Rane said.
According to data from Goa Medical College (GMC), the Department of Medical Oncology registered 1,550 new cancer patients in the last year. Breast cancer accounted for the highest share at 23 per cent, followed by gastrointestinal cancers at 18 per cent, genitourinary cancers at 15 per cent, and head and neck cancers at 15 per cent.
The Health Minister noted that GMC is providing advanced cancer treatments including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and palliative care, while simultaneously focusing on holistic support systems. “Counselling, nutritional guidance, rehabilitation services, emergency tele-counselling and weekly support groups are integral to our cancer care model, ensuring treatment is personalised and emotionally supportive,” he said.
Acknowledging the rising incidence of cancer, Rane emphasised that early detection remains the most effective life-saving tool. He urged citizens to prioritise awareness, timely screening and prevention through healthy lifestyle choices. “Avoiding tobacco and alcohol, staying physically active, consuming home-cooked nutritious food and practising yoga and meditation can significantly reduce cancer risk,” he added.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, the Health Minister said Goa will continue to strengthen its oncology services and outreach programmes to ensure that every cancer patient is treated with dignity, hope and purpose.
“This World Cancer Day, Goa stands united in its resolve to deliver compassionate, equitable and people-centric cancer care for all,” Rane said.
