PANAJI: The Department of Tourism has officially commenced construction of the Pradhan Mantri Ekta Mall (Unity Mall) project at Chimbel only after obtaining all necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the concerned departments along with the construction licence from the office of the Village Panchayat, Chimbel.
The project is fully compliant with statutory requirements and is located outside the buffer zone.
It is pertinent to note that the District Court has taken the construction licence on record, and no stay order has been issued, allowing the project to proceed.
The Unity Mall will create employment opportunities for the residents of Chimbel and surrounding areas. The project will provide meaningful and sustainable work, helping to enhance livelihoods, foster financial independence, and support overall socio-economic growth.
In addition to employment, the project focuses on skill development and entrepreneurship. The project is part of the Central Government’s “One District, One Product” initiative and artisans and entrepreneurs will get a dedicated platform to showcase their products. This initiative will enhance tourism activities while strengthening the capacity of local talent to engage effectively in the modern economy.
Minister for Tourism, Rohan Ashok Khaunte, stated, “The Unity Mall is a landmark initiative that will provide meaningful and sustainable employment to the local community while empowering artisans and entrepreneurs. It represents a model where economic growth, skill development, and cultural promotion come together to benefit residents directly.”
Director of Tourism, Kedar Naik, added, “Beyond creating jobs, the Unity Mall will serve as a hub for skill building and entrepreneurship. By connecting local talent to national markets, it will contribute to long-term socio-economic transformation in Chimbel and surrounding areas.”
The Unity Mall project exemplifies the Government of Goa’s commitment to promoting community-driven development, employment generation, and empowerment of local artisans, while fostering economic opportunities and national integration through the Pradhan Mantri Ekta Mall programme.
