CANACONA : Two buffaloes were found killed by unknown vehicles on Canacona Bypass (NH66) road at Tarir area late Saturday night.
According to sources, two buffaloes were found killed on the western side lane, signifying that some vehicles proceeding in Margao direction have knocked down the hapless bovines trapped on the road having no proper illumination .
As both the two buffaloes were lying about 25 metres distance from each other, it is believed that the unknown vehicles proceeding from Karwar to Margao direction had hit the bovines at great speed. Vehicle’s bumper pieces were also seen fallen on the roadside, suggesting that due to hitting the buffaloes, the vehicle too has suffered damages on its body.
Meanwhile, due to the frequent killing of bovines and the unprecedented number of mishaps taking place on MPCBR, residents’ voices grew stronger to demand erection of Barricades on either side of Bypass road to stop cattles from coming on the road.
People also complains that the traditional pathways of the cattles frequenting area are cut-off after the MPCBR was constructed particularly wherever the Bypass is passing through the paddyfields/khazan lands which are cattle-grazing areas, have demanded to construct under-passes for the cattles to cross-over through the traditional pathways.’
The non-functioning of street lights with no proper illumination across the 7 Kms long Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass Road also makes the fast-running vehicles/motorists difficult to identify the presence of the bovines (dressed almost in road-color) who crossing or squats in the middle of the road. Proper road illumination is a must on the road to avoid frequent incidents of mowing down of cattles by vehicles.
