CANACONA: The construction of five extra large size speed breakers on the Gaondongrem road is causing many vehicles to meet with accidents, atleast twenty, two-wheeler riders have lost balance and crashed in the road side drainage since the PWD in it’s strange wisdom constructed this huge humps defying the technical specifications.
Locals using this road informed Goenkarponn that the road leading to Gaondongrem from Bhatpal checkpost was recently asspalted, now the road is made wide also, but the construction of five huge speed breakers at a stretch of less than 5 km are causing many a accidents.
Every day atleast one accident occurs due to these speed breakers which are definitely not as per the standard design of a speed breaker informed Krishna Velip a resident of Indrawadi in Gaondongrem village.
Adding further he said that it’s a good thing to widen the road and to hot mix it, but these speed breakers are a cause of agony and pain to hundreds of vehicles who use this road.
“When the world knows the ill effects of these humps, we don’t understand why, how and who authorised the PWD officials to erect these speed breakers” he asked.
Just yesterday a two wheeler rider who was travelling from Canacona to Gaondongrem lost control over his vehicle and landed head down in the adjoining drain at Karvem, he was lucky to escape with minor bruises” Velip informed.
A civil engineer from the village on condition of unanimity informed that speed breakers are governed by specific rules, including some that necessitate marking and painting, to warn drivers, the draft guidelines on the provision of speed breakers for control of vehicular speed on village roads, states that drivers should be warned by signs that say ‘HUMP OR ROUGH ROAD,’ as detailed out in IRC:67-977, ‘Code of Practice for Road Signs.’
The sign should explicitly state ‘SPEED BREAKER,’ and should stand at least 40 metres in advance of the first speed breaker.
Also, the rules state that speed-breakers should be painted in a particular way, for a visual warning, and authorities should use luminous markings or embedded cat-eyes, to enhance night visibility.
These speed breakers neither confirm to the specifications nor are properly marked, the PWD officials get their salaries, I fail to understand why they fail to follow simple steps and build roads that are safe for commuters as well as pedestrians, he lamented.
Adding further he said that this is surely not the kind of population control our nation should aspire to implement through PWD.
When this correspondent tried to get an explanation from the concerned officers, there phone was out of reach.
