New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced strict action against Rohingya and Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the state, urging residents to remain vigilant. In a social media post, he stressed that ensuring the safety of the state, maintaining social harmony, and upholding law and order are the government’s top priorities.
“Strict and decisive action has been initiated against Rohingya and Bangladeshi infiltrators illegally residing in the state. I appeal to the vigilant public to verify the identity of any individual before employing them,” CM Yogi stated. He added that state security is a shared responsibility, and prosperity can only grow when safety is guaranteed.
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak reinforced the government’s position, saying that illegal migrants will be sent to detention centres, removed from electoral rolls, and face legal action. He also criticised the Samajwadi Party, claiming that its leadership has lost public trust and predicting setbacks for the party in the 2027 Assembly elections.
According to earlier surveys, around 1,000 Rohingya refugees reside in Delhi NCR, in areas including Madanpur Khadar, Kalindi Kunj, Shaheen Bagh, and Sonia Vihar. Estimates suggest that the total number of illegal Bangladeshi migrants and Rohingya in Delhi could reach 500,000, many living in pockets such as Jahangirpuri, Seemapuri, and Najafgarh. While arrests decreased after the COVID-19 pandemic, special cells had previously apprehended thousands.
Authorities cite security concerns, particularly following incidents like the 2020 riots and the 2022 Jahangirpuri violence, in which some individuals from these communities were reportedly involved. India has recently expelled several, maintaining that Rohingya are not recognised as refugees, despite approximately 40,000 residing across the country. Delhi Police, which set up a dedicated Bangladeshi cell in 2003, continues to monitor such cases closely.
