New Delhi: The United States military is reportedly prepared to launch strikes against Iran as early as this weekend, although President Donald Trump has not yet authorised action. The potential move follows an extensive American military buildup across the Middle East, signalling readiness for a sustained confrontation if ordered.
Washington currently has 13 warships deployed in the region, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, nine destroyers and three littoral combat ships. The USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, is also en route to the Middle East with additional destroyers. The presence of two US carrier strike groups in the region is considered rare and underscores the seriousness of the situation.
In addition to naval deployments, the US has sent advanced fighter aircraft such as F 22 Raptors, F 15 and F 16 jets, along with KC 135 refuelling planes and airborne warning systems to support extended operations. Flight tracking data has shown increased aerial activity across the region in recent days.
Tensions are centred on the long running nuclear dispute between Washington and Tehran. While recent talks aimed at reviving a nuclear agreement have shown limited progress, significant differences remain. Trump has repeatedly warned of military consequences if negotiations fail, and has previously ordered strikes on Iranian targets.
Several factors could influence a decision to act, including stalled diplomatic efforts, regional security concerns and pressure from allies such as Benjamin Netanyahu. The global oil market, currently well supplied, may also reduce immediate economic shock from potential disruptions.
At the same time, observers note that Iran’s leadership under Ali Khamenei faces internal pressures following protests and past military setbacks. Any US strike would likely prompt retaliation, though officials may assess that Tehran’s response capacity is more limited than in previous years.
