New Delhi: Yuki Bhambri made history by reaching the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, advancing to the last eight of the US Open men’s doubles with partner Michael Venus. The 14th-seeded Indo-New Zealand duo defeated fourth-seeded Germans Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-4, 6-4 in just one hour and 23 minutes. They will next face Croatia’s Nikola Mektic and American veteran Rajeev Ram, the 11th seeds in the draw.
The 33-year-old Indian, whose singles career has been hampered by injuries, had never progressed beyond the first round in singles at a Grand Slam. However, he has found greater success in doubles, reaching the third round at both the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.
Meanwhile, India’s junior contingent bowed out of the tournament. Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi gave second seed Hannah Klugman of Britain a tough fight in the girls’ singles second round but lost 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-3 after a two-hour battle. Maaya also exited the doubles event with partner Laima Cinalli, falling 2-6, 2-6 to fourth seeds Luna Vladson and Jeline Vandromme.
Hitesh Chauhan and Krish Tyagi were also eliminated in the boys’ doubles second round, ending India’s campaign in the junior categories.
