Gujarat: In Vadodara, a tragic automobile accident involving Rakshit Chaurasia, a 23-year-old law student from Prayagraj, has highlighted the dangers of driving under the influence of substances. Chaurasia recently revealed to be under the influence of marijuana on the night of the incident, which resulted in the death of Hemali Patel and injuries to seven others. The incident has sparked widespread public concern, with renewed emphasis on the stringent enforcement of traffic laws.
On March 13, Chaurasia’s Volkswagen Virtus sedan collided with three vehicles at a busy intersection near Amrapali Chaar Rasta in Karelibag. The crash claimed the life of Hemali Patel and left several others critically injured. Forensic reports confirmed that while Chaurasia was not intoxicated at the time of the accident, he had smoked marijuana, as did his co-passengers, Praanshu Chauhan and Suresh Bharwad. This revelation led to the accused being charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which criminalizes driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The incident garnered significant attention due to a viral video showing Chaurasia’s erratic behavior post-accident. In the footage, he is seen shouting “Another round!” and chanting religious phrases, sparking outrage and debates on social media. Chaurasia is currently in Vadodara Central Jail, while Chauhan has been arrested and Bharwad remains at large. This case serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with impaired driving and the legal consequences that follow.
