New Delhi In a spectacular display of talent and power, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a prodigy for Rajasthan Royals (RR), made history on Monday during their IPL match against Gujarat Titans (GT). The young batter set multiple records, rewriting the IPL history books with his explosive performance.
Suryavanshi became the fastest Indian to score a century in IPL history, reaching the milestone in just 35 balls. He broke the previous record of 37 balls held by former India all-rounder Yusuf Pathan, who achieved the feat for Rajasthan Royals in a match against Mumbai Indians in 2010. In doing so, Suryavanshi also became the youngest ever centurion in IPL history, at the age of 14 years and 32 days, surpassing Manish Pandey, who was 19 years and 253 days old when he made his century in 2009.
The teenager also made waves on the global stage by breaking the world record for the youngest to score a T20 ton. At 14 years and 32 days, he surpassed the previous record held by Maharashtra’s Vijay Zol, who scored a T20 century at 18 years and 118 days in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2013.
Suryavanshi’s breathtaking knock placed him as the second-fastest centurion in IPL history, just behind Chris Gayle’s iconic 30-ball century for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors in 2013.
The southpaw from Bihar was in full flight, taking down India’s 105-Test veteran Ishant Sharma in the fourth over of RR’s chase. Suryavanshi clobbered Sharma for 28 runs in a single over, which included three sixes and two boundaries. He continued his onslaught, smashing debutant Karim Janat for 30 runs in the 10th over.
Suryavanshi’s century came off 38 balls, before he was eventually dismissed for 101 by Prasidh Krishna. His remarkable innings has already made him a household name, particularly as he had previously set a record for being the youngest batter to score a fifty in T20s. He broke the record previously held by Hassan Eisakhil, son of former Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi.
Earlier in the game, Gujarat Titans’ opener Shubman Gill showcased his class with a controlled 50-ball 84, guiding his team to a competitive total of 209/4. Gill’s innings included five fours and four sixes, forming a 93-run opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who scored 39 off 30 balls.
Despite their strong start, the Titans suffered setbacks when RR’s Jos Buttler, with his blistering 50 not out from 26 balls, led a counterattack. Buttler unleashed a flurry of boundaries and sixes, punishing Rajasthan Royals’ lackluster bowling attack. He executed reverse pulls and ramps with ease, taking full advantage of the pace of the deliveries.
Gill’s smart cricketing decisions were evident as he picked the shorter boundary on the leg side, hitting several pick-up pulls, including a maximum off Yudhvir Singh. The Royals bowlers struggled to contain the Titans’ onslaught, especially Buttler, who dominated with a 24-run over off Wanindu Hasaranga that featured three sixes and a boundary.
The match proved to be a historic one for Suryavanshi, whose records will undoubtedly stand for years to come, and a thrilling encounter that saw Gujarat Titans post a daunting total.
