VALPOI/CALANGUTE: Valpoi and Calangute Police have registered multiple cases of gambling and matka betting during raids conducted on December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026, at different locations in North Goa. Several accused were caught red-handed, arrested, and later released on bail on the same day.
On December 31, 2025, Valpoi Police registered the first offence at 16.34 hours on the complaint of HC Shrikant K. Gaonkar (B. No. 4784).
The incident occurred at around 14.03 hours near Shiv Parvati Hotel, Sattari, where the accused, Dayanand s/o Yadoba Naik (60), a resident of Narayan Nagar, Honda–Sattari, was allegedly found accepting gambling bets from the public in an open place. Police seized cash of Rs. 430 along with other gambling articles.
The accused was arrested after following Supreme Court guidelines, informed his family, and was released on bail the same day. Further investigation is in progress.
Later the same day at 20.35 hours, another offence was registered on the complaint of ASI Mahadev Govind Gawas.
The accused, Santosh Gurudas Naik (50), a resident of Warchawada, Gauthan, Sanquelim, was allegedly caught accepting gambling bets near Don Mad, Keri, Sattari, at about 17.25 hours. Cash amounting to Rs. 580 and gambling materials were seized. He was arrested, granted bail the same day, and further investigation is underway.
At 20.46 hours on December 31, Valpoi Police registered a third case based on the complaint of HC Shankar Mahadev Gawas (B. No. 5488).
The accused, Arjun s/o Apa Gaonkar (49), a resident of Gholwada, Paryem, Sattari, was allegedly caught red-handed near Kulmaya Temple at around 18.30 hours while accepting gambling bets. Police seized Rs. 560 and other gambling articles. The accused was arrested, informed his family, and released on bail on the same day.
Another gambling case was registered at 22.51 hours on December 31 on the complaint of PSI Khushali s/o Vinay Naik.
During a raid conducted at around 22.22 hours at Maria Bar and Restaurant, Sattari, two accused—Ram s/o Krishna Paryekar (45) of Velus, Valpoi, and Shivanand s/o Chandrakant Gaonkar Arjun (30) of Savarshem, Sattari—were allegedly found playing card gambling (Rummy) in a room on the first floor.
Police seized cash amounting to Rs. 3,400 and other gambling articles. Both accused were arrested, informed their families, and released on bail the same night. Further investigation is being conducted by ASI Raghunath Gaonkar.
Meanwhile, Calangute Police registered a matka betting case on January 1, 2026, at 12.30 hours based on the complaint of ASI Satish Sawant.
The accused, Raju s/o Nunchand Turi (32), a native of Jharkhand and presently residing at Naikawado, Calangute, was allegedly caught red-handed between 11.05 hours and 12.15 hours near Dilkhush Hotel, Calangute Market, while accepting matka bets from the public.
Police recovered a matka slip book, carbon paper, a ball pen, and cash of Rs. 930. The accused was arrested and released on bail at 12.59 hours on the same day.
In all cases, police officials stated that further investigation is in progress.
