New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday highlighted the enduring significance of ‘Vande Mataram’ in India’s freedom struggle, calling it the mantra that inspired the nation during moments of crisis. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during a special session commemorating the 150th anniversary of the patriotic song, he described it as a source of energy and motivation for generations of Indians.
Addressing Parliament, PM Modi said the discussion was a “proud moment” and emphasised the importance of collective reflection on the song’s legacy. He recalled that during challenging periods, including the Emergency, ‘Vande Mataram’ served as a rallying cry, energising citizens even when many were imprisoned.
“‘Vande Mataram’ played a crucial role in India’s freedom movement,” the Prime Minister said. “It inspired sacrifice, perseverance, and dedication, guiding the nation towards independence.” He added that the song’s message extends beyond politics, representing a deep spiritual and cultural connection to the land.
Tracing its origins, PM Modi noted that the song was composed in 1875 by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, in the aftermath of the 1857 revolt. He highlighted that the song not only challenged colonial rule but also reflected a profound reverence for the motherland.
“‘Vande Mataram’ reminds us of our Ved Kaal, our sacred heritage. It teaches that this land is our mother, and we are her children,” he said. He emphasised that the song’s significance goes beyond the freedom struggle, embodying values of dedication, inspiration, and service to the nation.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come as Parliament commemorates 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, highlighting its role as a unifying force and a symbol of patriotism. Discussions in the House are set to continue over the coming days, exploring both the historical and contemporary relevance of the song in inspiring citizens and fostering national pride.
