Vasco: In a bid to tackle long-standing drainage and traffic issues, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Tuesday morning launched the construction of four new culverts and road widening works near Tanya Hotel. The initiative was inaugurated in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, municipal councillors, and local residents.
Speaking to the media, Salkar said the Rs 1.27 crore project aims to resolve critical waterlogging concerns during the monsoon and accommodate the growing traffic volume anticipated from the upcoming railway underpass.
“We currently have four Portuguese-era pipelines functioning as culverts in this stretch. These outdated structures often obstruct water flow, causing flood-like conditions in low-lying areas. The new culverts and a four-metre road widening will significantly improve drainage and traffic movement,” said Salkar.
He added that the widened road would allow for smoother passage of emergency vehicles, including fire tenders, and improve access to a proposed sports complex planned on the open ground opposite Tanya Hotel.
As part of broader infrastructure upgrades, road widening works will be undertaken at around eight locations in the constituency. “The objective is to not only ease traffic flow but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area. We’ve secured NOCs from residents and the Navy, and the public’s cooperation will be key to the smooth execution of these works,” Salkar noted.
He also informed that pre-monsoon works, including nullah cleaning, will commence shortly to ensure preparedness for the rainy season.
Describing the initiative as part of a long-term vision, Salkar emphasized that the project is being executed with a 30-year perspective in mind. He urged residents to support the ongoing works, which he described as long-pending and essential for the region’s development.
