VASCO: Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Wednesday launched the long-awaited work for the construction of a major nullah at Sasmollem-Baina, a key project aimed at resolving the recurring problem of waterlogging and flooding during the monsoon season.
The project, estimated to cost around ₹40 lakh, is taken under the WRD Department and is expected to significantly improve drainage and sanitation in the area. The new nullah will facilitate smooth flow of rainwater and prevent stagnation that often leads to flooding, particularly during heavy downpours.
Speaking after the inauguration, Salkar said the long-pending demand of the residents of Sasmollem-Baina was finally being fulfilled. “This nullah will ensure that rainwater flows smoothly without blocking the internal roads and residential lanes. During every monsoon, the people here suffer due to waterlogging, which not only damages roads but also poses health risks. With this project, we are addressing both safety and hygiene concerns,” he said.
Salkar added that similar initiatives to upgrade the drainage network in surrounding areas will be implemented in a phased manner over the next two months. “We have identified several zones where drainage improvement is urgently needed. Our plan is to take up these works systematically so that Vasco is better prepared for the next monsoon,” he stated.
The MLA also highlighted that the project would be closely monitored to ensure timely completion and quality standards. “We will make sure the work is completed within the stipulated period and that it meets the expected quality benchmarks. This government is committed to solving people’s day-to-day problems rather than making announcements that remain on paper,” Salkar said.
Local residents present at the site expressed relief that their long-pending issue was finally being addressed, thanking the MLA and the authorities for initiating the long-overdue drainage project.
