Cuncolim; In a thrilling inaugural match of the Vaidya Family Memorial Cup, Navelim Sporting Club secured a 2-1 victory over Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda. The match, organized by Cuncolim Union, was held at the school playground in Cuncolim on Monday. Velington Almeida of Navelim Sporting Club was named the Man of the Match, highlighting his pivotal role in the team’s success. This win marks a strong start for Navelim Sporting Club in the tournament.
The match saw Navelim Sporting Club take an early lead when Velington Almeida scored a powerful goal in the 22nd minute, beating Fatorda’s goalkeeper Clyden Clement. Despite Fatorda’s Charles Miranda coming close to leveling the score before half time, Navelim maintained a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Navelim doubled their lead through Ronaldo Pereira’s goal in the 52nd minute. However, Fatorda managed to pull one goal back just four minutes later through Edger Noronha. Despite several missed chances by Fatorda to level the score, Navelim held on to their lead, securing the win.
Velington Almeida’s outstanding performance earned him the Man of the Match award, presented by ex-MLA Clafacio Dias. This victory sets the stage for an exciting tournament, with Navelim Sporting Club looking to build on their strong start.
