VELSAO: A potentially dangerous stretch at Queeny Nagar in Velsao has finally seen much-needed safety intervention, bringing relief to residents who had been grappling with a rise in accidents amid ongoing highway works.
Acting swiftly on concerns raised by villagers, the Vasco Traffic Cell, led by PI Alvito Rodrigues, along with highway authorities, installed speed breakers at the accident-prone junction within two days. In addition to this, the traffic cell also introduced key safety measures, including dedicated road separators to regulate to-and-fro traffic, and deployed personnel at the junction who will continue to be stationed there to monitor movement and prevent mishaps. The prompt response drew appreciation from locals, who on Sunday came together to felicitate the traffic officials for their timely action.
The demand for safety measures had been strongly put forward by villagers along with panch member Jim D’Souza and social worker Roquezinho D’Souza, who had highlighted the increasing risk posed by speeding vehicles and poor regulation at the junction. With highway works underway, the situation had further escalated, making immediate intervention crucial.
Residents said the installation of speed breakers and additional measures has already made a noticeable difference, with vehicular movement slowing down and traffic becoming more regulated at the stretch. “We were living in constant fear due to the number of accidents here. The quick action taken by the traffic police has brought immense relief to all of us,” said Velsao panch member Jim D’Souza, adding that the move is expected to prevent further mishaps.
In a gesture of gratitude, the villagers felicitated the officials of the Vasco Traffic Cell and highway authorities, acknowledging the proactive approach of Vasco Traffic Cell PI Alvito Rodrigues in addressing public concerns.
Meanwhile, in a unique community-driven initiative, social worker Roquezinho D’Souza has stepped forward to sponsor daily water, soft drinks, and refreshments for traffic police personnel deployed at the junction.
“We decided that we would also extend our cooperation by offering refreshments whenever required, calling it a small token of appreciation for the efforts taken by the authorities,” said Social worker Roquezinho D’Souza
“This initiative is aimed to support officials who are stationed for long hours managing traffic and ensuring safety at the busy stretch.” Added D’Souza
Residents said the combined effort between the public and authorities has not only improved safety but also strengthened trust, ensuring that such issues are addressed without delay in the future.
