VERNA: Verna police arrested 37-year-old Antu Roy from Lakhipur in Cachar, Assam, in connection with Verna Police Station Crime No.118/2024 under Sections 420, 509 of IPC and Section 67A of the IT Act.
According to police, a 40-year-old woman from Kesarval, Cortalim, had lodged a complaint in December 2024, alleging that Roy repeatedly had sexual relations with her since 2015 on the pretext of marriage, later refusing to marry her. He also allegedly circulated obscene videos and pictures of her through electronic means, thereby insulting her modesty.
Roy was earlier absconding despite notices issued under Section 35(3) of BNSS. A team led by PSI Mahesh Bhomkar and Head Constable Girish Naik traced him to Assam on August 22. He was arrested at Lakhipur Police Station and produced before the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Lakhipur, which granted a transit remand.
Roy was formally arrested at Verna Police Station on August 23. The investigation is being conducted under PI Anand Shirodkar, supervised by SP South Tikam Singh Verma and SDPO Vasco Gurudas Kadam. Police said the motive was to cheat the complainant for monetary benefits, and efforts are underway to recover the device used to circulate the obscene material.
