VERNA: In swift action, Verna police cracked a mobile theft case within 24 hours, arresting two accused from Agassaim and recovering as many as 44 stolen mobile phones along with other articles.
The case was registered following a complaint lodged by Shreechand Nisad, a 23-year-old resident of Verna and native of Uttar Pradesh, who reported that between 12.30 am and 4.30 am on October 15, unknown persons had trespassed into his rented room near Mahalsa Temple, Old Mardol, Verna, and decamped with three mobile phones belonging to him and his roommates, causing a loss of ₹30,000.
Based on the complaint, Verna Police registered Crime No. 75/2025 under Sections 331(4), 305, and 112 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.
A police team led by PI Anand Shirodkar and comprising PSI Mahesh Bhomkar, HC Sudhir Talekar, HC Girish Naik, HC Ajit Shirodkar, HC Sujay Naik, PC Arvind Channapa Gol, and PC Atmaram Pole worked under the supervision of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
Through technical surveillance and mobile tracking, the police traced the suspects to a rented room at Agassaim. The two accused — Banamali Pradhan (25) and Kumar Behera (26), both natives of Kendrapada district in Odisha and residing at Agassaim — were apprehended and interrogated.
During interrogation, the duo reportedly confessed to committing the theft. A subsequent search at their residence led to the recovery of 44 mobile phones, one bag, and two SIM ejector pins believed to be stolen property.
Police said the accused targeted rented rooms of labourers at night, entering through unlocked main doors and stealing mobile phones kept inside.
Given the organized nature of their operations, police have added Section 112 of the BNS to the case. Both accused have been placed under arrest, and further investigation is in progress under the supervision of SDPO Vasco Gurudas Kadam and PI Anand Shirodkar.
