PANAJI: Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has criticised the State government for what he termed a departure from established Assembly convention by commencing the legislative session and presenting the Budget on the same day.
Addressing the issue, the Fatorda MLA said he had raised his concerns with Speaker Ganesh Gaonkar, questioning why the session could not have begun a day earlier on Thursday.
Sardesai pointed out that Fridays are traditionally earmarked for Private Members’ Business, allowing legislators to introduce and discuss their own resolutions and bills. He said beginning the session with the Budget presentation on the same day effectively curtailed the opportunity for MLAs to take up their Private Members’ matters.
Describing such conventions as integral to the smooth functioning of the Assembly, Sardesai stressed that established parliamentary practices should be respected to ensure fairness and adequate participation for all members.
