New Delhi: Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will begin their title defence in the Indian Premier League 2026 season with a home clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.
Despite entering the tournament as defending champions, head coach Andy Flower stressed that the team is approaching the new campaign with a fresh mindset rather than relying on last year’s success. According to him, every season brings different challenges as teams evolve and squads change.
A major positive for the Bengaluru side ahead of the season is the form and mindset of senior batter Virat Kohli. The experienced opener has looked sharp during training sessions, with the coaching staff expressing confidence that he is in excellent physical and mental condition heading into the tournament.
Kohli’s performance is expected to play a key role in the team’s batting plans, especially at the high scoring Chinnaswamy Stadium where strong starts often shape match outcomes.
Last season’s championship run for RCB included a powerful finish at home, although the campaign began with early setbacks at the venue where the team lost its first three matches. Those experiences have influenced the preparation for the new season, with the side focusing on better understanding the home conditions.
Leadership remains steady under captain Rajat Patidar, who guided the team to its first IPL title in his debut season as skipper. His calm approach and strong presence in the dressing room continue to be important for the squad. Vice captain Jitesh Sharma also plays a significant role by providing tactical support from behind the stumps.
On the bowling front, the team has received a boost with the arrival of Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood. While he is unlikely to feature in the opening match due to his recent arrival, the team expects him to join the playing group soon.
With familiar home conditions on their side, RCB begin the season aiming to build momentum early while adapting to the challenges of a new IPL campaign.
