Kolkata: As protests against the new Waqf law turned violent in Murshidabad district, claiming the lives of at least three people, the West Bengal Police has swiftly formed a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve into the complexities of the situation. The deployment of this specialized team underscores the gravity of the incidents and the state’s commitment to unrest resolution. Amidst this backdrop, the local community is grappling with the consequences of violence, while calls for peaceful protests resonate across the state.
In response to the escalating tensions, the SIT has been carefully structured with officers from diverse investigative branches. It includes an Additional Superintendent of Police from the Intelligence Branch, two Deputy Superintendents from the Counter Insurgency Force and the Criminal Investigation Department, five inspectors with a mix of CID and Traffic Police backgrounds, and the in-charge of the Cyber Crime Police Station. This diverse composition is designed to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the violent clashes that marred peaceful protests.
Ahmed Hassan Imran, Chairman of the West Bengal Minorities Commission, has unequivocally condemned the violence while emphasizing the importance of peaceful demonstrations. His stance aligns with that of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has initiated steps to reassure the affected community. CM Banerjee met with Muslim clerics and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives. This move aims to provide some solace during a difficult time.
The violence erupted on April 11 during protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, leading to the tragic death of a father-son duo and one person in police firing. The widespread property damage and multiple injuries highlighted the urgent need for enhanced security measures. Consequently, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs intervened by deploying nearly 900 personnel of the Border Security Force in Murshidabad, significantly bolstering the local security presence.
As the situation gradually stabilizes, the West Bengal police have reported the arrest of over 150 individuals in connection with the violence. Joint forces, including the CRPF and state police, continue to maintain peace in affected areas such as Samserganj and Dhuliyan. This deployment has been crucial in restoring normalcy after the unrest.
