New Delhi: India’s top men’s doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, delivered a composed and tactical performance to defeat Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri at the BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou on Thursday. The straight backed resilience shown by the former world number one pair helped them register a 21-11, 16-21, 21-11 victory in their second Group B encounter, pushing them to the brink of qualification for the knockout stage.
With two wins from two matches, Satwik and Chirag now sit firmly at the top of their group and enjoy a healthy advantage in points difference. The victory also underlined their growing confidence as the tournament progresses, particularly against opponents known for sharp net play and quick front court exchanges.
The opening game saw the Indians seize early control with disciplined defence and precise shot placement. Chirag led the charge at the forecourt while Satwik provided steady support from the back, allowing the pair to build a commanding lead before closing out the game comfortably. Their focus on tight service returns and early aggression prevented the Indonesians from settling into rallies.
The second game proved more challenging as Alfian and Fikri raised their tempo and kept the shuttle flat, forcing errors from the Indian duo. Despite moments of brilliance and spirited rallies, Satwik and Chirag lost momentum at key stages, allowing the Indonesians to level the match and force a decider.
In the deciding game, the Indians responded with renewed intent. Sharp anticipation, stronger communication, and improved court coverage helped them regain control early. Chirag’s attacking smashes and Satwik’s accurate placement at the baseline proved decisive as pressure mounted on the Indonesian pair, leading to a series of unforced errors.
Maintaining composure through faster rallies, Satwik and Chirag closed out the match with authority, sealing one of their most assured wins of the tournament so far. They will next face second seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in their final group match, with qualification now firmly within reach.
