PANAJI: MLA and Chairman of Goa Handicrafts, Rural and Small Scale Industries Development Corporation (GHRSSIDC), Pravin Arlekar, has reiterated the government’s commitment to phasing out Plaster of Paris (POP) Ganesh idols in the state.
Arlekar said several initiatives have been introduced to support clay idol makers, including the provision of clay machines and other facilities to artisans.
“I have taken many initiatives to stop the use of POP Ganesh idols. Now it is in the people’s hands — they should stop using them,” he stated.
The MLA emphasised that an immediate ban is not possible, but progress is being made gradually. “We cannot stop POP Ganesh idols instantly. This year we have stopped 50%, next year it will be 70%,” Arlekar said, urging citizens to adopt eco-friendly clay idols to protect the environment and uphold tradition.
