New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar faced a security breach in London when Khalistani extremists attempted to heckle him outside Chatham House. The incident, which involved a man tearing the Indian national flag, has sparked a strong reaction from India, with the government condemning the actions and urging the UK to fulfill its diplomatic obligations. This event highlights the ongoing tensions between India and pro-Khalistan groups in the UK.
During his visit to the UK, Jaishankar attended a discussion at Chatham House, where pro-Khalistan supporters staged a protest outside the venue. The situation escalated when a man approached Jaishankar’s vehicle and tore the Indian national flag in front of London police officers, who appeared unresponsive. India swiftly condemned the incident, labeling it a “provocative activity” by separatists and expressing disappointment over the misuse of democratic freedoms.
Jaishankar’s visit to the UK and Ireland from March 4 to 9 aims to strengthen India’s diplomatic ties with both nations. The India-UK relationship is built on a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that spans sectors like defense, trade, health, education, and people-to-people relations. Despite these efforts, the recent incident underscores the challenges posed by extremist groups.
This is not the first time Khalistani groups have demonstrated in London. Previous incidents include protests outside the Indian High Commission and an attempt to halt the screening of a film. The UK government has acknowledged these concerns and allocated funds to tackle pro-Khalistani extremism. During Rishi Sunak’s tenure, £95,000 was allocated to enhance capabilities against such extremism, reflecting a joint effort between India and the UK to address these issues.
