New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday dismissed concerns over reports that senior party figure Bhupen Borah may switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party, saying political realignments ahead of elections are common across the country.
Addressing reporters in Guwahati after a meeting with members of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, she remarked that movement of leaders between parties tends to increase as elections approach and is not unusual in any state. She stressed that such developments would not affect the Congress party’s resolve as it prepares for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
Projecting confidence, Priyanka Gandhi said the party would contest the polls with full determination. She described the upcoming election as a battle and asserted that the Congress has capable and committed leaders ready to take on the challenge. Emphasising unity, she said that party leaders and workers would stand together and fight collectively.
During her interaction with state leaders, discussions focused on strengthening organisational preparedness, enhancing coordination and refining election strategy. Internal deliberations also included feedback from grassroots workers, booth level management plans and measures to expand the party’s outreach across districts in Assam.
Her remarks come at a time of heightened political activity in the state, with speculation about defections and shifting alliances gaining momentum ahead of the elections. Several parties have intensified outreach campaigns and internal assessments as they seek to consolidate support.
Priyanka Gandhi, who is on a two day visit to Assam, has been meeting party workers and leaders to energise the organisation. Earlier in the day, she offered prayers at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati before attending party meetings. Her visit is being viewed as part of the Congress strategy to reinforce morale within the ranks and present a united front as the state heads toward a closely watched electoral contest.
