New Delhi: Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene admitted his side failed to execute their strategies after a defeat to Rajasthan Royals in a rain-shortened match in the Indian Premier League 2026.
Speaking after the game, Jayawardene acknowledged that his team was aware of the threat posed by Rajasthan’s aggressive batting lineup but could not deliver on their plans during the match. He noted that the bowlers struggled to maintain the right line and length, allowing the opposition to take advantage of favourable conditions.
Rajasthan Royals secured a 27 run victory, powered by explosive batting performances and disciplined bowling. Yashasvi Jaiswal led the charge with an unbeaten 77 from 32 balls, striking 10 fours and four sixes, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi added a quick 39 off 14 deliveries, including five sixes. Their aggressive approach helped Rajasthan post a strong total of 150 for 3 in the rain-truncated 11 over contest.
Mumbai Indians struggled to respond effectively during the chase, losing key wickets early in the innings. Jofra Archer dismissed Ryan Rickelton for eight, while Nandre Burger removed Suryakumar Yadav for six. Sandeep Sharma then sent back Rohit Sharma cheaply, leaving Mumbai reeling at 22 for 3 in just 4.3 overs.
Jayawardene said those early setbacks disrupted the team’s momentum and prevented them from building crucial partnerships. Despite the challenging situation, he believed the target remained within reach if the side had managed a few impactful hitting moments.
Rajasthan’s bowling attack, led by Nandre Burger, Sandeep Sharma and Ravi Bishnoi, maintained pressure throughout the innings, each picking up two wickets to restrict Mumbai’s chase.
Reflecting on the result, Jayawardene said the difference ultimately came down to small margins, pointing out that a handful of big hits could have changed the outcome. He added that while the team never believed the target was out of reach, they simply could not find the rhythm needed to finish the chase.
